Work Packages

Work Packages

The EOSC Beyond project is structured into several Work Packages (WPs) to support the growth of the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC). Each WP focuses on key areas such as developing new technical solutions, integrating providers, enhancing user engagement, and fostering innovation. These WPs collaborate to deliver dynamic resource deployment and create a federated network of pilot Nodes, ensuring progress in accelerating scientific applications, promoting Open Science, and aligning EOSC architecture with European data spaces.

This WP involves overall oversight of project activities, encompassing finance, quality, and risk management. It includes monitoring resource and financial aspects such as expenditures, contractual obligations, and reporting. Additionally, the work package involves coordination and assess the works among work packages, operation of the project’s governance boards, reviewing deliverables, monitoring risks, and developing contingency plans. Furthermore, it entails establishing and tracking key performance indicators (KPIs) and metrics to gauge project success.

OpenAIRE

Lead beneficiary: OpenAIRE

This WP involves developing, planning, and managing the project’s communication, exploitation, and dissemination activities, as well as identifying and promoting Key Exploitable Results (KERs). Additionally, efforts are directed towards fostering collaboration and synergy with other EOSC projects. Sustainability planning is a key aspect, to develop recommendations and deliver a sustainability report for EOSC Core and horizontal services. Intellectual property management is also prioritised, ensuring oversight of KERs and intellectual property assets to maximise impact and innovation.

This WP focuses on enhancing the overall EOSC architecture through collaborative design efforts, gathering input from various stakeholders such as the EOSC EU Node, EOSC Association, EOSC Projects, and research communities. It aims to broaden EOSC Resource Profiles to facilitate the discovery, access, and integration of diverse research data, applications, tools, and services. Efforts are also directed towards achieving interoperability between EOSC and European Data Spaces, collaborating with Smart Middleware Platform (SIMPL) operators.

Additionally, the project aims to improve and extend the EOSC Service Management System, refine data policies, and implement quality assurance and release management processes to ensure high-quality software. The WP also includes delivering the EOSC Core Innovation Sandbox to encourage experimentation and innovation. Lastly, it seeks to establish and support an open-source community to encourage collaborative development efforts within the EOSC ecosystem.

WP7 analyses gaps in individual Core services and the Core Platform as a whole. This analysis will be expressed as requirements for each individual component in order to increase their value and usefulness. WP7/8 aims to expand the capabilities and functionality of EOSC Core services to address the requirements defined in WP7 and to support Regional, National, and Thematic nodes, improving the scalability and stability of the federation.

This work package focuses on co-designing and delivering a coherent extension of the EOSC Core in support of interoperability, composability, and dynamic deployment of services. It will extend the EOSC Core architecture with specifications for: (i) The EOSC Integration Suite (IS), to provide tools and libraries that facilitate the interoperation with with EOSC Core services and EOSC Exchange services; (ii) The EOSC Execution Framework (IF), to enable composability and dynamic deployment of services.

The work packages focus on implementing the EOSC Integration Suite (IS), which will support sharing and access to integration software libraries (adapters) for EOSC Core and Exchange services. They will deliver the initial and final releases, respectively, of the EOSC Integration Suite, empowering users to seamlessly integrate EOSC services and foster collaborative data management practices. Additionally, they will also design and implement a solution for interoperability with Data Spaces (SIMPL), in collaboration with WP6.

WP13 focuses on implementing the initial release of the EOSC Execution Framework (EF), integrating it with the EOSC Portal, Catalogue, and Marketplace to enable dynamic resource deployment. The main objectives are: (i) Extending the EOSC Interoperability Framework Registry (IF Registry) to support service orchestration; (ii) Delivering an EOSC Deployment Service for dynamic deployment of EOSC Exchange services using the TOSCA standard; (iii) Establishing the foundation for developing EOSC horizontal applications utilising EF capabilities; (iv) Initiating work to define an EOSC Digital Rights Vocabulary.

WP15/16 focuses on co-design and integration activities for pilot EOSC Nodes and Data Spaces. This involves collecting requirements for Data Spaces and potential EOSC Nodes, creating service integration plans, and identifying support groups for pilot co-design activities. Pilot test cases include Data Spaces such as CNB-CSIC, ENES, METROFood-RI, and CESSDA, focusing on advanced capabilities for service orchestration and workflow execution via the EOSC. For EOSC Nodes like Instruct-ERIC, LifeWatch, METROFood-RI, NI4OS, e-INFRA CZ, and NFDI, the focus is on building and federating Nodes within the EOSC framework.
